Accurate COD Measurement with COD Vials Low Range Part Number K-7355

The COD Vials Low Range Part Number K-7355 – EPA accepted, is specifically designed to measure Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) in water with a range of 0-150 ppm. COD determination is a crucial process in municipal and industrial laboratories to gauge the overall organic contamination levels in wastewater. This contamination level is quantified by calculating the amount of oxygen needed to oxidise the organic matter present in the sample.

Dichromate Reactor Digestion Method

CHEMetrics provides two dichromate reactor digestion methods for quick, straightforward, and safe determination of COD levels across various ranges in wastewater: the USEPA-accepted Method* and a mercury-free method. The USEPA-accepted method incorporates mercuric sulfate in the reagent to mitigate chloride interference. The mercury-free alternative is suitable when chloride interference is not an issue and USEPA reporting is not mandatory.

Easy-to-Use Leakproof Reagent COD Vials Low Range Part Number K-7355

CHEMetrics’ reagent COD Vials Low Range Part Number K-7355 vials are leakproof and contain premeasured amounts of sulfuric acid and potassium dichromate. To determine COD, the analyst needs to:
1. Remove the Teflon-lined screw cap from the vial.
2. Add the sample to the vial.
3. Replace the cap and heat the vial at 150°C in a standard digestor block for two hours.

Photometer Compatibility and Results

Upon completing digestion, results can be obtained using any photometer that accepts 16-mm diameter cells. CHEMetrics COD vials are compatible with the V-2000 multi-analyte photometer, CHEMetrics’ single analyte COD photometers, and numerous Hach1 spectrophotometers. Built-in Hach COD methods and calibrations can be utilised without needing a new calibration. Additionally, the CHEMetrics™ kit includes a generic calibration equation for use with other spectrophotometers.

What is Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD)?

Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) is a critical parameter in wastewater management that quantifies the amount of oxygen required to oxidise organic matter present in water. The COD test involves digesting a water sample with potassium dichromate and sulfuric acid at 150°C for 2 hours, providing a measure of water pollution levels.

Why Test for COD?

Measuring COD is essential for:

  1. Assessing Water Pollution: COD tests estimate pollution levels in water entering and exiting wastewater treatment plants and industrial facilities.
  2. Regulatory Compliance: In the United States, the Clean Water Act (CWA) mandates treatment facilities to comply with pollutant release targets set by the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES).
  3. Optimising Energy Use: COD levels help wastewater engineers determine the oxygen required for treatment, influencing aeration equipment power consumption and allowing for better energy management.
